set in the hidden Martindale valley.”
The Fold at Hallin Bank – A Romantic Lake District Holiday Cottage for Couples
The Fold has its own entrance from the lane outside Hallin Bank. You enter directly into the kitchen/diner, where there is space for coats and boots. The kitchen contains table and chairs, electric cooker, under-worktop fridge with ice-box, microwave, kettle, toaster, ample kitchen and dining equipment housed in a range of new kitchen cupboards. The downstairs bathroom, recently renovated, has a large shower and a washing machine. Stairs rise from the kitchen into the large loft bedroom. This contains a kingsize double bed and a single bed.
The Main Room
The main room on the ground floor is the living room, approximately 6 x 4 metres. At one end is a log-burning stove with comfortable furniture around it and TV/DVD. At the other end is a sofa and other furniture on a raised area that can be curtained off. The floor level windows in this room are a curiosity: they were once little doorways for sheep and pigs. A garden door opens on to a terrace with panoramic views over the valley. Here you have a chance to observe the local wild life at close range.
Outside
Outside, you can descend from the terrace into the apple orchard, filled with snowdrops and daffodils in springtime. The land is steeply sloping, but towards the lower end of the orchard there is a further levelled and paved area for sitting out, in a spot that gets maximum sun in summer. A gate leads into our field below and to Martindale beck. The fields above the house belong to us, too, and you can walk through them up to the open fellside. As with many Lakeland farmhouses, a public footpath runs past the buildings on the upper side but it is not intrusive since footfall is light and the buildings ‘face’ the other way, towards the valley. The main Hallin Bank garden is private.
